ESOL’s newsletter this year (2020-2021) marked our 20th anniversary. This issue featured an interview with ESOL Alum Hannah Denham (2020), highlights on our Co-presidents Jackie Tamez and Curry Sherard (’21). Tamez returns this year in the role of copresident, alongside Lexi O’Brien. In addition, the newsletter describes we adapted our services this past year, despite the pandemic in order to continue teaching English, translating and interpreting for our community members\/partners. Finally, the newsletter includes an interview with Professor Jayne Reino, describing her experience this year as a co-faculty advisor alongside Ellen Mayock.<\/p>\n

In addition, the newsletter describes we adapted our services this past year, despite […]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":3292,"featured_media":3611,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_et_pb_use_builder":"on","_et_pb_old_content":" Overview<\/u><\/p> \u00a0<\/p> *W&L employees should keep the immigration status of all students confidential.\u00a0 Even before deferred action for childhood arrivals (DACA), undocumented students were allowed to study at a private university in the State of VA without having to be reported to the Virginia Department of Education.\u00a0<\/p> \u00a0<\/p> *Typically, 5-10 current students are undocumented, hold DACA, or are otherwise deferred action eligible.\u00a0<\/p> \u00a0<\/p> *Undocumented students can study at a private university in Virginia (or a public university if they pay out-of-state tuition).\u00a0 They can study, but not work.\u00a0 They can receive W&L financial aid, but not federal or state aid.\u00a0 They are currently unable to get a driver\u2019s license, though legislation pending before the VA General Assembly would permit undocumented immigrants to obtain a one-year driver\u2019s permit.\u00a0 They are unable to get a social security number, though a presently undocumented person could have previously been documented and social security numbers do not expire if they were able to attain one previously.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p> \u00a0<\/p> *DACA students can apply for a work authorization, a driver\u2019s license, and a social security number.\u00a0 Work authorization and driver\u2019s license typically last for the period of deferred action (typically two-year periods).\u00a0 Even if DACA ends, a student could potentially remain in status until their most recent renewal period expires, though that is not certain.\u00a0 DACA students who were granted advanced parole (a lengthy process with significant paperwork and additional fees) before September 5, 2017 could be eligible to study abroad, but travel abroad is not recommended at this time.<\/p> \u00a0<\/p> *Undocumented\/DACA students are counted as international students statistically at the university, but are not considered by the Center for International Education (CIE) as international students requiring the regular support services given to international students who are visa holders, since undocumented\/DACA students have usually been in the United States for most of their life and are exempt from the usual United States Department of Homeland Security (USDHS) scrutiny.\u00a0 CIE certainly provides support as needed if an undocumented\/DACA student reaches out to them.\u00a0<\/p> \u00a0<\/p> Resources<\/u><\/p> \u00a0<\/p> *Class Deans<\/p> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 -reach out proactively to check in with undocumented\/DACA students<\/p> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 -help connect them with other undocumented\/DACA students if they want\u00a0<\/p> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 -explain Angel Fund and that fees can sometimes be waived or covered (ex.
