ESOL is currently designing a pilot summer program for K-12 children in the local area, which is slated to begin next year (Summer 2022). The program will be focused on engaging local youth in academic (English/Spanish Language & Literacy + Core subjects) and creative activities as well as outdoor physical activities and excursions. Thanks to the support of the Office of Community Based Learning at W&L, ESOL was able to hire two Summer Interns to work on the project, Andrea Rojas (’22) and Elizabeth Avalos Gonzales (’24). In addition, the summer program pilot has been made possible by the generous support of the Rockbridge Health Foundation-Carilion Rockbridge Community Hospital. Before the Fall term begins, ESOL will hold a community focus group to gather more information from local parents about what type of programming would benefit their children. If you or someone you know would be interested in attending this focus group, please reach out to Ellen Mayock mayocke@wlu.edu and/or Jayne Reino jreino@wlu.edu
